Playbox Theatre first staged the production in 2008 as a live-action animé Monkey – Journey To The West, based on the Chinese literary classic. The piece was adapted for the stage by writer, Toby Quash, and was directed by Artistic Director Emily Jane Quash. The epic journey of enlightenment is believed to be as important to the Chinese as Shakespeare or Dickens is to Britain. A version of the story inspired a cult 1980s TV show and 'Gorillaz' head-honchos Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett created an opera based on the story. Playbox Theatre's production features a company of 26 young actors blending storytelling, dance, movement, acrobatics and strong visuals highlighting the popular, almost 'animation' based style. Playbox Theatre, Santa Monica Playhouse's sister company in the UK, is a professional creative organization developing theatre for and with young people. Based at The Dream Factory, its own custom-designed complex in Warwick, it aims to develop the skills talent and confidence of young people in the performance arts through exciting and innovative methods. Founded in 1986, Playbox serves young artists and audiences across the Warwickshire and West Midlands regions with training and performance studios supporting its main creative base. Playbox Theatre places at its heart young people as artists and audience. Monkey is a free BFF Binge Fringe Festival of FREE Theatre ENCORE production. The BFF (October 15 – November 12) offers over 40 plays, workshops and family-oriented events thanks to generous grants from the City of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica Arts Commission, Pearl and Bill Bordy, the Cotkin Family and Playhouse PALS.
